Hey,
I'm looking for a hosting service that will let me develop and manage a site built with PHP and MySQL (hopefully it would provied phpMyAdmin or something similar). Please let me know of hosting services that are pretty good about responding to service calls or emails - I'll be using the site for my research so I need something that is reliable and can handle about 50 visitors at a time.
thanks!
Adam
Re: Looking for good web hosting service
We host our site in house but I've heard good things about both Lunarpages web hosting and Hostgator.
I know that Godaddy is great for domain registration but can cause some serious problem with hosting.
Hope that helps.

Re: Looking for good web hosting service
My uncle uses Bluehost. What he showed me was outstanding...ssh access, which would be huge for me if I ever wanted external hosting. I checked out their website:
1,500 Gigabyte Hosting Space (NEW!)
Host UNLIMITED Domains!!!
2,500 POP/Imap Email Accounts
15,000 GIGS of Transfer (NEW!)
SSH (Secure Shell), SSL, FTP, Stats
CGI, Ruby (RoR), Perl, PHP, MySQL
2000/2002 Front Page Extensions
Free Domain Forever!
Free Site Builder (NEW)
24/7 Superb/Responsive Sales/Support
for $6.95/month. My uncles website is pretty fast, so I'd say they might beat dreamhost there, but that's just based on the above comments. Check them out if you haven't already made up your mind.
Re: Looking for good web hosting service
I use DreamHost too. Mostly because they are inexpensive, but they also give 500+GB of storage and 5+TB/month of bandwidth (more than you could use on their shared-box hosting).
Like Ben said, sometimes your site randomly takes a while to load, but it is usually pretty good. 50 people have never been on my website at once, so I can't say how it would handle that load. The few times I emailed their support, I got a quick response.
Also, if you go with them, find a good promotion code. I was able to take off $110 using a promo code.
I am sure there are better hosts out there, but for the price they are pretty good, and I am satisfied.
Re: Looking for good web hosting service
Is this research school related? If so, why do you need to get external hosting?
Re: Looking for good web hosting service
The current applicaiton is for school related purposes but I plan to add other applcations, and I am leaving this school in a few months - I figure get it set up and leave it for a bit. Hope this clears up my question.
thanks,
Adam
Re: Looking for good web hosting service
Yeah, just curious. I'm using Dreamhost for a few things right now and am pretty satisfied with it overall. Every now and then, the latency on one or two of my sites will suddenly shoot skyhigh, but it doesn't last long. You get a lot for your money too. You can host as many domains as you want, have as many users as you want, as many mysql databases as you want, etc.
