New meeting times (and sort of minutes)

So the LAN party went of reasonably well, considering that we had a monsoon which kept a lot of people away and power outages all through the night from the lightning. I was told the ETRL took a direct hit, but I didn't see it.

The only bit of business that was covered was setting a preliminary meeting time and agenda. The time that most people agreed on was every other Wednesday at 6pm. Our first meeting will be next Wednesday and I'll post the agenda in the event.

If you have a problem with this time or day-of-the-week, then please attach a comment here. It doesn't do anyone any good if you just decide not to show.

RHEL deprecated in favor of CentOS

RedHat enterprise Linux is no longer the standard Linux distribution in use by EECS. CentOS is now the distribution of choice in the department.

The distributions supported and recommended by the LUG remain Ubuntu and Fedora.

Booting your image with qemu (recommended)

A while back I posted a howto on booting your floppy image with dosemu. I've since discovered that dosemu sucks pretty hard and qemu is much better.

Here is the entirety of my "booting a floppy image with qemu howto":

qemu -fda fdimage -boot a -no-fd-bootchk

And there you have it ....

Wanted: EECS GDM Theme

Ever thought the generic RedHat Enterprise Linux login screen found on the EECS workstations was kind of boring? Want to do something about it? Now's your chance!

I'm looking for a GDM theme, ideally customized to EECS somehow (because we're that cool!) that includes buttons for "language", "Session", some meaningful phrase for XDMCP (remote host login), and Shutdown, restart, and disconnect (which are dynamically chosen based on need). I would also like the hostname and the time to be on the screen somewhere. A "designed by the LUG" built into the theme would be fine, too.
