WSU Wireless in Fedora 8

This guide shows how to use the new WSU PEAP wireless deployment with Fedora 8. This guide assumes you are using Network Manager which is installed by default. If you have chosen to use a different window manager than is default you may need to take steps to launch Network manager, or you may follow the manual instructions.

Fedora doesn't appear to have a package for the CA certificates, so this guide is using the certificate bundled with the Pidgin instant messenger client. Please verify that Pidgin is installed before continuing.

  1. Open up a terminal and run sudo /usr/sbin/setenforce 0
  2. Left click on the Network Manager icon on your menu bar
  3. Select "WSU Wireless" from the list of choices (not "wsunexus")
  4. This will bring up a screen that looks like:
  5. Change Wireless Security to "WPA & WPA2 Enterprise"
  6. Change Authentication to "Protected EAP (PEAP)"
  7. Change PEAP Version to "Version 0"
  8. Enter your username (WSU ID) and password
  9. Click on the "CA Certificate" button which will open up a dialog for finding a file.
  10. Navigate to "/usr/share/purple/ca-certs/" and select the file "Verisign_Class3_Primary_CA.pem" and then click the "Open" button.
  11. Verify all your settings and click "Connect"
  12. When the icon quits swirling around, return to your terminal and run restorecon -v '/etc/resolv.conf'
  13. Still in the terminal, run sudo /usr/sbin/setenforce 1

Now each time your computer detects the "WSU Wireless" network and no ethernet connection it will connect with these settings automatically.

If you need to edit the settings for some reason, there appears to be a bug in the Fedora version of Network Manager. It will not allow you to edit the connection once it's been made. You must delete the connection named "Auto WSU Wireless" and start over.
